Editor's Summary

This was a week defined by scale and succession: frontier labs posted staggering usage numbers and shipped new models built for autonomy, while Google DeepMind quietly changed hands at the top. Google announced the Gemini app has crossed 1 billion monthly active users, calling it the company's fastest-growing product ever and putting it roughly on pace with ChatGPT, with over 150 million images generated daily. xAI matched the week's ambition with Grok 4.6, a frontier model built on Grok 4.5 aimed at long-running agents and more ambitious visual work, matching GPT-5.6 Sol on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index and priced from $2 per million input tokens across the xAI API, Cursor, and Grok Build.

Autonomy was the other throughline. xAI also launched the public beta of Grok Bot, an always-on agent that signs into a user's existing tools to complete multi-step work end-to-end, learning a workflow by observing it once and then running it independently. OpenAI leaned further into a specific high-stakes use of that autonomy, expanding its Daybreak cybersecurity program with two new access tiers for vetted defenders and a purpose-trained model, GPT-5.6-Cyber, that the company says completes 95% of advanced cybersecurity tasks versus 1.5% for its general-purpose model — a sharp illustration of how much capability narrow specialization still buys.

At Google DeepMind, Koray Kavukcuoglu took over day-to-day leadership as Senior Vice President, with co-founder Demis Hassabis moving to Chair of DeepMind and Chief Scientist of Alphabet to focus on long-term AGI strategy and Isomorphic Labs. The reshuffle signals a sharper operational focus on frontier model performance and developer tooling even as Hassabis steps back from day-to-day execution.

Two secondary stories rounded out the infrastructure and product picture. Microsoft is reportedly in talks with TSMC to significantly expand production of its in-house AI chips, seeking capacity for more than 300,000 units in 2027 as it works to reduce dependence on Nvidia. And Microsoft trimmed its Copilot lineup, merging consumer and enterprise apps into one product and cutting underused features like Group Chats, AI podcasts, and Deep Research by August 18, alongside dropping the Mico character as part of a broader rebrand to Microsoft Copilot.

To watch next week: whether Grok Bot's early usage patterns hold up outside the SuperGrok/Cursor beta audience, and how Kavukcuoglu's DeepMind reshapes its frontier roadmap now that Hassabis has stepped back from daily operations.
