Anthropic Accuses Alibaba of 'Illicitly' Accessing Its Claude AI Models
Anthropic accused Alibaba of orchestrating the largest known distillation attack on the company, using approximately 25,000 fraudulent accounts to conduct 28.8 million exchanges with Claude between April 22 and June 5, 2026. Operators linked to Alibaba's Qwen AI lab used adversarial distillation to harvest Claude's most commercially valuable capabilities—including software engineering and agentic reasoning—to train competing models without the costs of primary research. Anthropic notified the White House about the campaign, framing it as part of a broader pattern of Chinese AI labs illicitly extracting frontier model capabilities.
