Google I/O 2026: Gemini Spark, Android 17, and the biggest AI push yet

Google's annual developer keynote delivered a wave of AI-first announcements, with Gemini front and center across every product line.

• Gemini Spark — a personal AI agent for complex planning tasks (weddings, travel, projects), integrated into Gmail, Google Workspace, Android, and iOS. Rolling out in beta to AI Ultra subscribers in the US next week.

Code with Claude 2026 goes global — London today, Tokyo next month

Anthropic's developer conference is running in London today and tomorrow (May 20–21), with All Day 1 keynotes and breakout sessions streamed live. Tokyo follows on June 5–6. Notably, no new model was announced at the event — Anthropic is positioning it as a developer ecosystem and platform story rather than a model launch moment.

Claude Managed Agents gets MCP tunnels and self-hosted sandboxes

Anthropic shipped two new privacy and security features for Claude Managed Agents on May 19:

• MCP Tunnels — lets agents route calls through a private network, reaching MCP servers inside enterprise VPCs without exposing them to the public internet. A significant unlock for regulated industries.
• Self-hosted Sandboxes — enterprises can now run agent execution environments on their own infrastructure, keeping code and data fully within their perimeter.

Anthropic on track to surpass OpenAI's valuation — $900B+ round closing this month

Anthropic's latest fundraising round — at least $30 billion — is expected to close by the end of May at a $900 billion-plus valuation. That would make Anthropic more valuable than OpenAI's $852 billion March valuation for the first time. OpenAI launches three new real-time audio models for voice AI agents

OpenAI introduced a trio of models purpose-built for live voice interactions:

AI coding goes mainstream: Cursor 2.5, Claude Code limits doubled, multi-agent now default

The AI coding landscape reached an inflection point in May 2026 — multi-agent workflows graduated from demo to production across all three major platforms:

• Cursor Composer 2.5 (shipped May 18) — matches Opus 4.7 and GPT-5.5 on benchmarks at $0.50/M input, $2.50/M output tokens.

Google, Microsoft, and xAI agree to pre-launch AI model testing by US government

The Center for AI Standards and Innovation (CAISI) announced agreements with Google DeepMind, Microsoft, and Elon Musk's xAI to evaluate AI models before public release. OpenAI separately opened access to its most advanced models across all vetted levels of government. The move was partly triggered by Anthropic's Mythos model raising new cybersecurity concerns at the White House, which is now weighing a formal AI review process.

Gemini for Science and Verify AI: Google targets research labs and online trust

Two quieter but substantive Google I/O announcements:

• Gemini for Science — brings together Gemini's reasoning and multimodal capabilities for research workflows, helping scientists model complex systems and analyze datasets at scale.
• Verify AI — a provenance and trust layer for AI-generated images, developed with Nvidia and OpenAI. Designed to help users identify synthetically generated content in news and social media contexts.
